David BrayneArtists > David Brayne David Brayne studied at Nottingham School of Art, Gloucestershire College of Art and Exeter University. His work has been widely exhibited, both in mixed and one-man shows. He regularly shows at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and was elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2001.
He has a very innovative technique and when watching him work one can become almost mesmerized. He uses numerous pigments and has a stock of about 100 in his studio, each pigment having it's own characteristic. David explains "Some, like the iron oxides are quite dull-looking, but when you apply them to the paper or canvas surface they can behave quite differently - if you work them in with a cloth or brush they turn very bright. I have my favourite pigments and I often start with those; other colours are used less frequently and perhaps more intuitively." David starts by drawing the key feature with a soft pencil of an appropriate colour .." initially my aim is to create a sound underpainting, for which I tend to used the pigments as they are, mixed with the acrylic gel or gum arabic, but with no intermixing of colours". The finished paintings are both emotive and beguiling with a almost visionary quality. | Click a thumbnail to see more detail.. |
